I Heart Characters // Tsundere Hot & Cold Lover aka Caro learns anime terms

Hello fellow bookworms 💗 I’m back again with the I Heart Characters meme! This week’s topic is Tsundere Hot-n-Cold Lover described by Dani as a “manga/anime term, but can be applied to any character who is strong-willed but melts inside when faced with the ONE”. I had never heard of this trop before, as I don’t know much about anime at all, so I did some further research as I was super intrigued and interested to learn more. According to TV Tropes a Tsundere is an “outwardly violent character who “runs hot and cold”, alternating between two distinct moods: tsuntsun (aloof or irritable) and deredere (lovestruck)”. There are either Harsh (tsuntsun as the default) or Sweet Types (deredere as the default mode) – I choose only Harsh Types!

The Darkling (with Alina)

“The problem with wanting,” he whispered, his mouth trailing along my jaw until it hovered over my lips, “is that it makes us weak.” 

I couldn’t NOT choose the Darkling, as he mostly fits this prompt perfectly (keep in mind that I have only read Shadow and Bone, so no spoilers please). He was surprisingly gentle at times (usually when he wants to be) and is amused by Alina’s snark rather than be offended and going off at her like she expected. In the beginning you really think he has at least a few decent characteristics, but there is no denying that the Darkling is also very powerful and mostly is in ‘murder mode’. He is the villain after all and a great one in my opinion. Therefore, his default mode is to be in power and control of everyone else, as well as distanced from everyone else. He is not big on showing gentle feelings, but I personally do think that he melts a bit around Alina. The Darkling also has a bit of an obsession with her (see quote above) and she might be the only person that can kick his ass (and become his equal), which makes for an interesting dynamic. He definitely appears to be lovestruck in Alina’s presence at times, as much as he can be, as the question if the Darkling is truly capable of feeling real love remains debatable. I mean he’s a bad guy who does a lot of horrible things, even to Alina, so he usually has no regard  for everyone else. But with her it seems to be this switching between ‘time for murder’ and ‘obsessing over Alina’. So yeah, I’m interested to see how the rest of the Trilogy explores their dynamic!

Warner (with Juliette)

Jackie will be delighted that I mention them (I really need to reread the books soon). I really feel like I don’t talk enough about Warner and Juliette here, when I love them so dearly! Warner is definitely a Tsundere type, as he is generally not warm and fuzzy and remains the villain of the story for a lot of the first three books (I also haven’t read Restore me yet). However, from the beginning he kind of has a thing for Juliette and she wastes no time challenging him, which makes their interactions very interesting. As time goes on Warner shows a bit more of his character and not only the harsh side, which is his default. With Juliette, his ‘love’, he is the softest of all characters and … I mean that boy was pretty lovestruck when it came to her, so it makes him a perfect candidate for the prompt! He truly cares about her and only her. It’s the entire “the whole world could burn, but not you” thing. Warner also believes that Juliette is strong and does not need protecting, which makes me think that he truly is the right one for her. Both don’t want to fix each other, they love each other the way they are.
