NEWT TBR ✨ Becoming a Magizoologist Part 2

Hello fellow bookworms ✨It’s already time for the NEWT’s again 😱 I have been eagerly awaiting the next Magical Readathon and now it’s almost here! I loved doing the OWL’s in April and discovered the Readathon by participating in the 2018 NEWT’s. If you’re interested in participating in the Readathon the host Book Roast has a lot of videos, as this is a follow up Harry Potter themed Readathon for the NEWT Exams ❀ You don’t have to do the OWL’s first (though some people have been sitting them in July), though it’s recommended as you’re choosing a magical career based on the credits you collected in April and now are set to collect in August. Here is some general information about how this will work, if you’ve never heard of the Magical Readathon before!

For the NEWT’s the structure is slightly different, because each subject now has three prompts correlating to the exam rating scale from Acceptable to Exceeding Expectations to Outstanding! Depending on what career you want to do, you’ll have to reach different grades in different subjects, but it’ll require you to read slightly more books than in the OWL’s! You can find the prompts for all the NEWT’s here and there is also the wizarding career guidebook if you need a refresher on your required prompts 😊

Here is the host’s announcement video for all further questions!

Let's Talk (2)

Care – Gentleness – Perception

As announced on my OWL Readathon TBR I’ll still be following the Magizoologist career, that means I have to read 7 books for the NEWTS! I like that this is a stress-free career for me, as there are also careers that require 10+ books. I actually completed all 12 OWL’s, but I definitely won’t be able to do all NEWT’s (there are 19 I think, way too many) and I don’t want to do the Alchemist career anyway, so it fits. (I’m curious how many people will be able to complete the career though πŸ‘€)

My required NEWT’s are: An O in Care of Magical Creatures and an E in both Charms and Herbology! I will also be sitting two additional NEWT’s to get an O in Charms and Herbology and choose an A in Potions for another extra credit. In total this will be 10 books, which is doable for me without getting stressful. I mean I have the entire month without any obligations 😈

Required Subjects ✨

Care of Magical CreaturesΒ πŸ’›

✨ A: Follow the spiders! Why couldn’t it be follow the butterflies? Book title that starts with the letter A for Aragog ✨

1. Avatar The Last Airbender: The Search (Gene Luen Yang)

2. A Court of Wings and Ruin (Sarah J. Maas)

This is probably the hardest prompt for me, because I’m not really in the mood for any of the books starting with A on my TBR πŸ˜… (I have now realized that I actually have A Curse so Dark and Lonely on my TBR … I’m such a genius πŸ˜‚ . In my defense, I don’t own a lot of books that start with A and I’m not really in the mood to buy a new one) I was going to read the Avatar comic I had been meaning to, but it’s checked out of the library so I wasn’t able to get it yet. That leaves … ACOWAR as a book I really want to read … and it’s literally 700 pages, this is a bad idea (or maybe not, as Sam from thoughtsontomes has hinted that the Tome Topple Readathon will be back in August)

MC Acceptable

✨ E: Book under 300 pages ✨

1. Book Elements (Stefanie Hasse)

2. 9 from the Nine Worlds (Rick Riordan)

Finding a book under 300 pages was harder than expected, because I seem to own only longer books. For now, I have two options: one is a library book from a German author that I have been interested in trying out and the second one is the Magnus Chase bonus novella that I would have to treat myself to! I don’t know which one I will choose, but I’m excited about both of them 😊

✨ O: Grab onto Fawke’s tail! Read a book with a bird on the cover ✨

1. The Storm Crow (Kalyn Josephson)

You know last time for the OWL’s I struggled so much to fulfill the prompt for land animal and had so many books that contained birds … but now that we actually have that prompt I couldn’t remember any of them πŸ˜‚ Luckily my friend Swetlana was kind enough to offer to lent me her copy of the Storm Crow for the Readathon, so now I have found a book that I’m super excited to read 😍 Not only does it have a bird on the cover, it also has ‘Crow’ in the title so maximum bird has been achieved for the prompt πŸ˜„Let's Talk (2)

CharmsΒ πŸ’›

✨ A: Read a book that you think has a gorgeous cover ✨

1. A Curse so Dark and Lonely (Brigid Kemmerer) πŸ“š

There are a lot of options for this prompt, so I choose a book that I bought on my vacation to Berlin in April, because it’s truly stunning. A Curse so Dark and Lonely has a shiny silver spine that catches the light really well, it’s one of the most beautiful books I have bought this year 😍 However, I have also heard great things about the contents of the books, with many bookish friends loving it, so I have high hopes for this one 😊

Charms A

✨ E: Read a comic/manga/graphic novel (or a book under 150 pages) ✨

1. Wires & Nerve (Marisa Meyer) πŸ“š

I didn’t really own any graphic novels etc. but then my friend Sandra was so kind to send me Wires & Nerve, a graphic novel companion all about Iko because I really wanted to read it! I love the Lunar Chronicles and craved new content, so this is perfect and now is the right time to read it as well. My library also has a good selection off comics, graphic novels and manga, but I really want to read the one book I own now (and hopefully love it) πŸ’•

Charms E (1)

✨ O: Spongify (softening charm)! Read a paperback book ✨ Extra Credit

1. Fireblood (Elly Blake) πŸ“š

2. On the Come Up (Angie Thomas) πŸ“š

Due to hardcovers being rather expensive (😭) I own majoriyl poaperback books, so this prompt is easy for me to fullfill. I choose two books from my physical TBR that I have been meaning to read and will get to the one that most calls to me at the time! I have had Fireblood on Readathon TBR’s several times now … so will it actually happen this time? Who knows? I really want to make it happen, but if I’m not in the mood, I have the beautiful US paperbacks from On the Come Up waiting for me πŸ’–

HerbologyΒ πŸ’›

✨ A: Mandrake! Quick, put your headphones on! Listen to an audiobook (if not – green cover) ✨

1. Eliza and her monsters (Francesca Zappia)Β πŸ“šΒ πŸŒΌ

2. Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell) πŸ”„ πŸ“š

I’m very sad, because I really wanted to listen to an audiobook for the prompt, as it was so cleverly done, but my Audible trial just ended and my library isn’t really good with its access to audiobooks 😒 Therefore, I went with the alzermatibe of the green cover book and will most likely read Eliza and her Monsters, because I have been wanting to read this book for such a long time now and have finally gotten my own copy (thanks to Marija whose giveaway I won 😊)! I have a backup book (my reread of Fangirl), but I really think that I will be reading my first choice for this prompt 😍

Herbology A (1)

✨ E: Read a book between 350-390 pages ✨

1. Bring me their hearts (Sara Wolf) πŸ’Œ

2. The Witch Hunter (Virginia Boecker) πŸ’Œ

I like this prompt, because it leaves a lot of options and room for change, so I picked two library books that I want to check out! My library recently got Bring me their hearts and someone told me it has lots of banter and humor, so it sounds right up my alley! The other really tempting choice is the Witch Hunter because … well WITCHES are always my mood πŸ˜„ I’ll see which book I’m more in the mood for, but as of right now I’m very excited for get to both of them! πŸ’•

Herbology E

✨ O: Read a book with a flower on the cover ✨ Extra Credit

1. The Gilded Wolves (Roshani Chokshi) πŸ“šπŸ―

The purple/pinkish things you see on the cover are actually flowers, you just cannot see them as well, because I shrank down the cover πŸ˜„Β  So after all the hype I finally got the Gilded Wolves for my birthday and have been waiting for an opportunity to read it for a while now. Not that I need more convincing, because I love Roshani Chokshi and her first Star-Touched Queen Duology is criminally underrated! By now mixed Reviews for her newest book have come in, but I love her works, so I have the hope that I might enjoy it a lot πŸ’—

Additional Subject ✨

PotionsΒ πŸ’›

✨A: Pollyjuice Potions: read your friend’s favorite book! ✨

1. The Vanishing Stair (Maureen Johnson)

2. They Both Die at the end (Adam Silvera)

I asked my friends Sandra and Swetlana for their recommendations and they both were kind enough to oblige (there were too many books to choose from) πŸ’– I picked out Sandra’s two choices The Vanishing Stair (she’s going to lent me the book, clearly I have the best friends 😭) and They Both Die at the End (this sounds sad, I’m scared), because I one of the books Swetlana mentioned ended up fitting perfectly for the ‘bird on the cover’ choice πŸ˜„ Now I hope that I end up liking the books!
