Books I WANT to read, but don’t want to READ Tag 📚

Hello fellow bookworms 📚 Today we’re doing a Book Tag that I find perfectly sums up my mood when it comes to reading sometimes: Books I WANT to read, but don’t want to READ. You know the feeling when you want to read a certain book, but when it comes to actually starting it you totally blank and make up excuses? That’s basically what I feel for several reasons when it comes to books that I keep procrastinating reading. Let’s actually talk about those books and reasons today with the help of a Book Tag created by Jami @ jamishelves! Thank you so much for creating this Tag, it truly spoke to me 😊

Me trying to keep up with all the books I WANT to read but don’t want to READ

1: A book that you feel you need to read because everyone talks about it

➽ Lady Midnight (Cassandra Clare) 📚 The only reason I still have this book on my TBR is because a lot of people say it’s a lot better than the Mortal Instruments and therefore worth reading. I also got a copy for my birthday a couple of years ago, so there’s no excuse to not read it. I’m willing to give it (and the rest of the Series should I enjoy book 1) a shot, but otherwise I’m pretty much done with Clare’s books. The times when I used to love them are sadly over and I’m not as interested in the Shadowhunterverse as I was back then, so the Dark Artifices are the last Series I’m willing to try. Not sure what I will think about Lady Midnight, but I do hope I might enjoy it, as the praise I’ve encountered has convince me to read it eventually! Last year everyone was talking about the Series conclusion, so now truly is the time to read it, even though I still haven’t fully convinced myself to do it. (The books being very long also doesn’t help, book 3 is a brick 😂)

2: A book thats really long

➽ The Broken Eye(Brent Weeks) 📚 Don’t get me wrong I loved the first two books in the Series, but the books are all SO long, I’m talking 800+ pages each and they are not easy to get through either. No matter how much I love them, it took me ages to read book 1 and 2, because they are written a bit densely with lots of action scenes and complicated politics that make my head steam. Usually it takes me 1 to 2 weeks (depending on my reading pace) to get through them and I have kind of avoided reading book 3 for that reason. The length makes me a bit intimidated as there is a lot to keep track of and I admit that spending so much time to read one single book makes me uneasy as it means putting other books on hold. Maybe … this month it will happen? Or in October? I should read this during my semester break while I still have the time 😅

3: A book you’ve owned / had on your TBR for too long

➽ Wayfarer (Alexandra Bracken) 📚 I’m proud that I FINALLY managed to read Fireblood in August but … Wayfarer is still on my TBR after several attempts to read it during Readathons and putting it on my 2018 priority TBR … oops. I have been wanting to read the sequel/conclusion to Passenger, after I adored that book in 2016 but it has not happened and now it’ll be THREE years soon. Double oops. I guess I’ve been cautious going into the book because conclusions tend to be intense and I’m afraid that I won’t be satisfied with how things are going to wrap up. I’ve had Wayfarer on my physical TBR since January 2018 and even though I had all the intentions to read it as soon as I could, it has been a while. I truly hope that it will happen this year, as I genuinely loved the first book and would be happy to return to the world.

4: A book that is ‘required’ reading (eg, school text, really popular classic – something you feel obligated to read!)

➽ Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro) 📚 There wasn’t a book that immediately popped into my head when I saw this prompt, as I try to steer clear of required reading. I’m not in school so I don’t have to read fiction books any longer (god bless, they always choose the worst books for my class, while other courses read The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Hunger Games 😟), even though I did enjoy reading MacBeth and The Kite Runner, the only decent books. However, I feel inclined to read Never Let Me Go, because I find the topic interesting and saw part of the movie years ago. I admit that it has never been very high on my priority list, as adult fiction books are usually out of my comfort zone, so I reach for other books from my TBR. Still, I would like to read this one day!

5: A book that intimidates you

➽ Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Susanna Clark) 📚 First of all, this is over 1000 pages long … someone please send help this is a tome! Probably the biggest book I will ever read, I don’t think I have read a book that was over 900 pages. So yes, this is the biggest and therefore most intimidating book on my TBR that I only added because it is said to have fantastic worldbuilding that makes it the favorite book of one of my favorite authors. I feel like I could learn a lot from it … but the process of actually reading it seems very daunting, I fear that it’ll be very dense and hard to get through. Still, I want to read Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell even though I don’t know when it will happen, as it might take me a long time AND prove to be a more challenging read 😱

6: A book that you think might be slow

➽ Strange the Dreamer (Laini Taylor) 📚 I’m very excited to be getting to more Laini Taylor books, as especially this one has been receiving a lot of buzz over the years. Almost everyone has been talking about how Strange the Dreamer convinces with beautiful prose and a vivid setting, so that got me interested to read the book. However, I also heard that the book is slow in pacing and as it’s already heavy on the prose, it could be a bit of a slower read overall. I don’t mind if a book isn’t fast paced but it depends on how everything else is coming together, as I fear the book might get hard to read when it’s too stuffed with description and details. Regardless, I do have high hopes for Strange the Dreamer, as I love myself an interesting fantasy world that might compensate for other aspects!

7: A book you need to be in the right mood for

➽ The Ship Beyond Time (Heid Heilig) 📚 I managed to finally get book 1 off my physical TBR last year, but I have procrastinated reading the sequel. Now I did like the first book, but it was a difficult read at times as it features an emotionally abusive father. In my personal opinion he wasn’t called out for his emotional abuse enough in the end, something that rubbed me the wrong way. Therefore, I’m wary going into the sequel as I doubt that the father will be changed without having faced enough consequences for his behavior and that will be hard to read. Also, a last-minute love triangle is brewing even though the second guy is not nearly as well-developed as any other character. I feel like this book might annoy me a bit and get me angry, so I need to really be in the mood to read it 😅

8: A book you’re unsure if you will like

➽ Red Rising (Pierce Brown) 📚 I’m very intrigued by the premise and the fact that Swetlana has been liking the books a lot! My library has a copy of Red Rising that I have been eyeing for a while now, but I also heard some not so great things that make me hesitant to pick it up and unsure if I’ll even end up liking it. The general lack of good representation for female characters and the trigger warnings for rape that I’ve seen mentioned in book reviews have made me a bit apprehensive. I’m still planning on picking it up, but I could see my enjoyment and rating of the book go either way. Let’s hope I’ll end up liking it, despite some flaws that might be resurfacing!
