Middle Grade Books I Want to Read ❤️ MG March

MG March

Hello fellow bookworms ❤️ I didn’t use to reach for Middle Grade books often – since I’m not the target audience and also didn’t have an interest in most books – but I have discovered last year that there are certain books I love to read! I especially love Middle Grade Fantasy and Horror as both genres speak to me. I have simply figured out that most MG Contemporary books don’t work for me as a reader, which initially led me to believe it would be the same case for all Middle Grade. Since it’s Middle Grade March this month, I decided to share some of the MG books on my TBR that I’m excited to read 🥰 I also have another post with my favorite Middle Grade books planned for later this year, so keep your eyes out for that 👀

📚 Backlist Books 📚

  • The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman ✨ Fantasy ✨ Set in a Graveyard
  • The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf ✨ Fantasy ✨ Ghost Companion
  • Ghost Girl by Ally Malinenko ✨ Fantasy ✨ Ghosts, Spooky Setting

  • The Accidental Apprentice by Amanda Foody ✨ Fantasy ✨ Forbidden Forest/Magical Beasts
  • The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken ✨ Fantasy ✨ Demon Possession/Deals
  • The Polar Bear Explorers’ Club by Alex Bell ✨ Fantasy ✨ Wintery Read, Adventure

  • A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll ✨ Contemporary ✨ Coming of Age, Autistic MC
  • Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry ✨ Contemporary ✨ Written in Verse, MC with Tourette Syndrome
  • Wishyouwas by Alexandra Page ✨ Historical Fantasy ✨ Letters, Set in London

➽ Compared to YA I haven’t read that many backlist Middle Grade books, so I’m only now discovering some hidden gems! Unsurprisingly most of them are Fantasy books, as this is what I reach for the most. I especially love spooky Middle Grade books by The Graveyard Book, Ghost Girl, The Girl and the Ghost and The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding, because they tend to have a great atmosphere and are the perfect fall reads without being too scary. There are also some rare contemporary books I hope to read, especially Forget Me Not which has been on my TBR for literal years and I still haven’t read it 🙈 The book that I most recently added was Wishyouwas, as it came recommended by Gavin @ How to Train your Gavin, a Booktuber who mostly talks about Middle Grade books! I have liked watching some of his videos in order to get recommendations, as he’s an expert 😄

📒 2022 Releases 📒

  • Ellen Outside the Lines by A.J. Sass ✨ Contemporary ✨ Release Date: March 22, 2022
  • Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega ✨ Fantasy ✨ Release Date: April 5, 2022
  • The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton ✨ Fantasy ✨ Release Date: May 3, 2022

  • Ravenfall by Kalyn Josephson ✨ Fantasy ✨ Release Date: August 30, 2022
  • Silverborn: The Mystery of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend ✨ Fantasy ✨ Release Date: October 11, 2022 ✨ Book 4 in the Nevermoor Series

➽ Compared to the last years I have more Middle Grade releases I’m anticipating: these are ordered according to their release date 📒 To no one’s surprise my most anticipated Middle Grade (and generally most hyped book) is Silverborn, the next Nevermoor book. It’s one of my new favorite series and I’m so sad I have to wait until October to actually read it 😢 However, I have other magical books I’m anticipating that sound right up my alley as well: Witchlings (I LOVE me some witches), Ravenfall (I loved the author’s YA book ‘The Storm Crow’) and The Marvellers (magical school and cool abilities)! The one contemporary book is Ellen Outside the Lines, a coming of age book about an autistic kid 😊

📖 Sequels 📖

  • Auf Silberner Fährte [eng: The Silver Tracks] by Cornelia Funke ✨ Fantasy ✨ Book 4 in the Reckless Series
  • Warren the 13th and the Whispering Woods by Tania Del Rio ✨ Fantasy ✨ Book 2 in the Warren the 13th Trilogy
  • Brackenbeast by Kate Alice Marshall ✨ Horror ✨ Book 2 in the Thirteens Duology

  • The Secrets of Winterhouse by Ben Guterson ✨ Mystery/Fantasy ✨ Book 2 in the Winterhouse Trilogy
  • Escape From Aurora by Jamie Littler ✨ Fantasy ✨ Book 2 in the Frostheart Trilogy
  • The Vanderbeekers and the Hidden Garden by Karina Yan Glaser ✨ Contemporary ✨ Book 2 in the Vanderbeekers Series

➽ There are some Middle Grade Series I’m dying to continue/finish, though not as many compared to the YA series I currently have ongoing 😂 One of my top priority reads is the fourth Reckless book because we had to wait for AGES for it and I definitely need 1) a refresher on what happened in the previous book and 2) some way to get hold of a copy! All of the series are actually in order of how important they are to me – I’m incredibly excited for both Warren the 13th and Brackenbeast, as I started both of these spooky MG series last year and had such a good time with them 🥰 Winterhouse & Frostheart are going to be the series I continue this December, as I love reading wintery books then! The least priority right now is The Vanderbeekers series, there are many books and I had some mixed feelings about the first book.

  1. This post has just made me realise how good MG covers are– always so colourful and fun. Plus, characters typically look a little happier than on YA covers! 🤣 I really hope you end up loving all these books! It is always great to find hidden gems! I am really intrigued by The Girl and The Ghost, after loving Alkaf’s previous book! Happy reading! 💞
